The Domegaia Story
Domegaia is all about imagination and methods to manifest it.
Our very first dome home – and the genesis of our company – was simply a matter of building what was in photographer and designer Steve Areen’s imagination. And he’s far from the only one with an idea.
For most of human history, humans were their own homebuilders, using materials nearby to build structures out of their minds that fit their lives – and usually in partnership with nature.
Somewhere along the way, humanity went astray. We got trapped in a system where we must work constantly, for most of our lives, just to pay for the home we live in. That’s no way to live.
“You don’t see the birds and bees
enslaved to a mortgage.”
Hajjar Gibran, Domegaia Founder
The home of your dreams – not someone else’s
The home of your dreams – not someone else’s
The ideas in your mind are probably much closer to what you need, what would fulfill you and what would help you live more sustainably. Domegaia wants to teach you to get these ideas out of your mind and into reality.
That’s why we offer education, collaboration, community, tools and methods that empower just about anyone to build their vision just about anywhere on the planet – at a fraction of the cost of the typical American home. It may seem wild, but it’s true. We’ve been teaching all kinds of people to do it all over the world.
And we’re just getting started.
Domegaia’s Origin Story
Domegaia didn’t start with a watertight business plan and a group of investors. It began with artistry combined with a passion for the planet that was never intended to be a product at all.
Domegaia founder Hajjar Gibran was a longtime engineer and design/build contractor, but after decades in the business, he couldn’t ignore the fact that his industry was destroying ecosystems. Together with friend, artist and photographer Steve Areen, they constructed a completely different kind of structure in Thailand. It was a series of domes built from lightweight aircrete – essentially cement and water injected with foam. It was organic, sexy, curvy and inspirational. And it cost a whopping $11,000 USD.
Domegaia wasn’t created to sell a product. We grew organically as a reaction to worldwide interest in this sustainable, affordable, achievable – yet breathtakingly beautiful – method of building.
Ever since, we have has been growing and evolving. Hajjar entrusted the company to his son, Joel, and Joel’s partner, Ella – two enthusiastic, energetic and imaginative young entrepreneurs. We’ve expanded our footprint in the alternative building and aircrete community to include intensive workshops, introductory courses, consultation, design and a full suite of dome building equipment (LINKS). And there’s a lot more on the horizon, like fully digital workshops, engineer pre-approved/permitted designs, community conventions, aircrete design/build partnerships and exciting new equipment.
We’re glad you’re along for the ride with us!
