2. Aircrete Building Questions

What is Aircrete?

Aircrete, is simply a mixture of water, cement powder, and a water-based foam. It’s also sometimes known as aerated concrete or cellular concrete. This unique building material combines the durability of concrete with the lightness of air. It’s made by mixing tiny air bubbles into a cement slurry, creating a lightweight, durable material that can be molded into almost any shape. > Read all about Aircrete here.

What do I need to start building with Aircrete?

The essentials are a foam generator, mixer, forms, and cement. Our bundles include the specialized tools — you’ll need to source cement, water, and an air compressor locally. > Read about the Domegaia Building System here.

What does a typical project cost?

Costs depend on design, location, finishes, and how hands-on you are. A simple guest dome can be built for ~$10,000–$20,000 in materials; multi-dome homes or boutique retreats scale from there. Aircrete delivers high value per dollar versus conventional methods.

What’s the cost per square foot?

Most small dome builds land around $200-$300 per square foot, including foundation, finishes, and labor. DIY builds can be as low as $50-$70 per square foot.

Do I need special permits to build?

Requirements vary by region. Because Aircrete isn’t in every building code yet, some areas ask for engineering approval. We can support your permitting path with structural guidance and plan adjustments; a local engineer typically provides the final stamp.

Can I build multiple stories with Aircrete?

Yes—with the right engineering. We focus mostly on single-story domes, but you can add lofts or second floors supported by interior walls, and multi-level builds are possible with proper structure.

How big can I build? Can domes be connected?

There’s no fixed limit—builders scale domes up, link multiple domes, and create compounds for living, hosting, and work.  It's often more efficent and easier to build multiple connected domes than one giant dome.

Can I build this myself?

Definitely. Many first-time builders succeed with our tools + courses and a small crew. Our method was designed to be DIY-friendly.

Do I need to follow your floor plans exactly?

No. Treat them as a starting point—customize to your site, climate, and lifestyle, or work with us on a fully custom design.

Can I build off-grid?

Yes. Aircrete’s light weight and insulation make it ideal for remote/off-grid projects. Builders commonly integrate solar, rainwater catchment, and composting toilets.

Is Aircrete suitable for all climates?

Yes—Aircrete performs well in hot, cold, dry, and humid conditions. It resists mold, pests, and rot, and its thermal properties help stabilize indoor temps year-round.

Is Aircrete waterproof? What finish do I use?

Aircrete is porous, so finish it properly: stucco and elastomeric coatings are our go-tos for sealing and durability.

Can I add plumbing and electricity?

Yes—standard plumbing and wiring integrate cleanly into Aircrete walls and openings.

Is Aircrete only for domes?

No—while we specialize in domes and arches, Aircrete works for straight walls, sheds, furniture, benches, garden beds, and hybrid structures. Explore what is possible with Aircrete!

Where can I see examples?

Browse the photo gallery on our site, plus Domegaia’s Instagram and YouTube for time-lapses, walkthroughs, and community builds.

3. Architectural Plans

What do I receive and in what format?

Plans are delivered digitally (PDF) so you can print, share with contractors, and submit for permits. Many plan packages include source files for customization.

Do I need a SketchUp membership?

No. You can open .skp files in the free version of SketchUp for Mac or PC.

Do I need plan approval or an engineer?

Often, yes. These plans are an excellent starting point, and our engineers provide the final approval to match local code. You can also contact us to help translate your Aircrete project into language your local authorities can understand—making the road to permits and engineering approval clearer, faster, and less stressful.

Can I customize the plans?

Absolutely. You can edit the provided source files yourself or ask us about plan customization services (e.g., layout tweaks, openings, climate-specific details, dome-to-dome connections).

4. Equipment & Bundles
